Gandhi once said, “I like your Christ. But I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” This saying resonates deeply in a world where the actions of many who profess faith often diverge from the teachings of Jesus. It raises an uncomfortable question: Are we truly embodying the love that Christ exemplified?
In 1 John 4:20, we read a stark reminder: “If someone says, ‘I love God,’ but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?” This scripture invites us to examine our hearts and our interactions with others. The essence of our faith should not be measured by theological debates or church attendance alone but by the love we extend to those around us.
For many who aspire to follow Jesus, there lies a crucial reality to confront: If we are not intentionally being shaped by His example and teachings, it is likely that external influences are molding us instead. The world offers countless distractions, cultural norms, societal pressures, and even well-meaning yet misguided interpretations of faith that can lead us away from the core message of Jesus, love.
The most vital question for each of us is not whether we can recite scripture or participate in church activities but rather: Are we becoming more loving? It’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of knowledge or spiritual practices; these are certainly valuable pursuits. However, they pale in comparison to the transformative power of genuine love.
Too many Christians remain unaware of the staggering depth of God’s love for them. This profound truth has the potential to change everything, it can turn hearts hardened by cynicism into vessels overflowing with compassion. When one truly grasps how deeply they are loved by God, it becomes impossible to withhold that same love from others.
Unfortunately, many still view their faith as merely a means to an end, a ticket to heaven or a pathway toward personal success and happiness. This transactional approach diminishes the beauty and richness of what it means to follow Christ. Instead of seeking relationship and transformation through Him, they settle for superficial gains.
Imagine if every believer took time each day simply to bask in God’s presence, to absorb His unwavering affection and grace. What if this understanding ignited within them an insatiable desire to share that love with others? The ripple effect would be nothing short of revolutionary.
In this journey towards authentic faith, let us strive not just for knowledge but for heart transformation. Let us embrace vulnerability and seek connection over division. As Gandhi pointed out so poignantly, our challenge is not merely about aligning ourselves with doctrine but embodying Christ-like love in every interaction.
As followers of Jesus, may our lives reflect His character more than ever before so that when people encounter us, they see Him shining through our words and actions. In doing so, perhaps they will echo Gandhi’s words differently: “I like your Christians because they reflect your Christ.”
