As I travel the highways, it’s almost impossible to miss the construction signs. Work zone ahead. Reduce speed. Proceed with caution. Bright orange markers line the road, lanes shift, and traffic slows. For a moment, everyone understands something important: this area is not finished. It’s still being worked on.

What if we had signs like that in our lives? Not something to hide behind, but something honest. A sign that simply reads: Under construction.

Because if we’re truthful, that’s exactly where we are.

There are days when the old parts of us show up again, old habits, old reactions, old ways of thinking we thought we had already moved past. We make the same mistakes, say things we wish we could take back, and respond in ways that don’t reflect who we’re trying to become. When people see those moments, they often form opinions based on what’s in front of them. They don’t always see the work happening beneath the surface. They don’t see the process.

But God does.

God doesn’t look at you and see a finished product that failed. He sees a life that is still being shaped, still being refined, still being restored.

Imagine if people could see that clearly. Imagine if, before they judged your struggle, they saw a sign that read: Slow down… God is still working here.

Transformation takes time. Just like those construction zones on the highway, progress doesn’t always look clean. It can be messy, inconvenient, and frustrating. There are delays. There are detours. There are moments when it feels like nothing is changing at all. But even then, the work is still happening.

God is not in a hurry to walk away from you because you’re not perfect yet. He is committed to finishing what He started, even when it feels like the same ground is being dug up again, even when progress seems slow, and even when others only see the mess.

Too often, we judge ourselves and others as if we’re supposed to already be complete. We forget that growth is a process, not a moment. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, and God doesn’t work in shortcuts. He works in layers, building something deeper than what can be seen on the surface.

So instead of hiding our struggles, maybe we acknowledge them, not as excuses, but as evidence that God is still at work.

A construction zone isn’t a sign of failure. It’s a sign of progress. It means something is being built, something is being repaired, something is being made better than it was before.

When you fall back into old habits, you’re still under construction. When you struggle with things you thought you had overcome, you’re still under construction. When you don’t feel like you’re where you should be, you’re still under construction.

So slow down. Give yourself grace. Give others grace.

Because the same God who started the work in you hasn’t abandoned it.

One day, the road will be smoother. The lanes will be clear. The process will be complete.

But until then, let the sign remain:

Work zone ahead. Proceed with grace. God is still working here.

“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 1:6
